About Bachelor of Veterinary Science [BVSc]

Bachelor of Veterinary Science or B.V.Sc. is an undergraduate program in veterinary. Students who have passed 10+2 in the field of Physics, Chemistry and Biology are eligible for this course. A person who is graduated in this course carry forwards the profession of a veterinarian.

Veterinary medicine is the branch of Science that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, disorder and injury in non-human animals. The duration of this course is minimum of 3 years and maximum of 5 years. The average fee in India could range anywhere from 7,000 to 22,000 INR depending upon institutes. What is B.V.Sc. all about?

The course deals with surgery and handling of animal live-stocks. Besides surgery, a person needs to take care of non-spreading of diseases in animals and need to give advices regarding medicine and vaccination of the same. They take up practice exclusively of either large animals such as cattle including horses, pigs, sheep; poultry or small animals mainly household pets including dogs, cats, birds or both. The approach in treatment vary according to different animals.

Who should go for B.V.Sc.?

This course is all about treatment and study diseases of animals and pets. Hence people who have genuine love and compassion for animals should go for the course. Animals can’t express their pain and problems hence a person should be skilled enough to understand their problems and then go for the ailment. Also people opting for the course can contribute to the society by providing medicinal support to living beings who cannot express their pain hence it is a highly satisfactory job for people who carry a lot of affection for them.

The duration of this course including Animal Husbandry is of 5 years (including internship) like in Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bikaner, Rajendra Agricultural University, Samastipur and of 3 years without AH as in Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi, National Research Centre on Mithun, Dimapur, Bombay Veterinary Science College, Mumbai. Although it is suggested to go for both B.V.Sc. and AH as it widens up the level of a veterinarian in terms of getting better job opportunities and experience.

Academic options after Bachelor of Veterinary Science

After one is done with Bachelor’s in Veterinary Science, the person can look forward to Masters in Veterinary Science or MVSc, which is a 2 years course, to get a higher degree and deeper knowledge about veterinary concepts. There are around 50
